After decades of serving his community, Livingston County Sheriff John York says he is not seeking re-election, ending a 44-year career in law enforcement. He made the announcement to his staff Tuesday.
Sheriff York tells News10NBC he is looking forward to spending more time with his grandchildren once he finishes his term.
York joined the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office in 1969. Twenty years late, he became Sheriff.
Sheriff York is endorsing his undersheriff, James Szczesniak who officially announced Tuesday that he is running for sheriff.
This sets up another battle among Livingston County republicans. Livingston County Sheriff's Investigator Thomas Dougherty is running as a republican candidate as well.
Last year, two republicans tied in the republican primary for Livingston County District Attorney, causing a three way race.
Democratic candidate Greg McCaffrey won and was able to keep his spot as District Attorney.
