Health officials are taking an aggressive stand to curb smokeless tobacco use among students. Thursday marks the Great American Spit Out which encourages chewing tobacco users to quit.
Chewing tobacco is still sometimes marketed as a safer alternative to smoking but according to the Institute of Drug Abuse, as of 2009, more than 13-percent of high school boys actively used smokeless tobacco products. Among high school seniors who ever used dip or chew, three quarters had started by the ninth grade.
Health officials say young people are still the target of big tobacco even if they might not be inclined to smoke.
