The City of Canandaigua says they are one step closer to growing their economy and bringing in tourists.
That's because they just got approval this week to move forward with a construction plan that would bring a new hotel and conference center to the Steamboat Landing site.
Hotel officials say the re-development will transform what is currently the Steamboat Landing into a world class, year-round resort, which will be a destination for visitors and locals alike.
When complete, the Canandaigua Club at the Canandaigua Harbor Hotel will have 176 rooms and several conference centers.
On Sunday News10NBC spoke with the mayor of Canandaigua who says this will be a welcome addition.
“It's going to be a wonderful facility for Canandaigua. It's going to offer conference space and hotel rooms. It's going to offer time shares for people who want to stay a bit longer,” said Canandaigua Mayor Ellen Polimeni.
With more than 150 rooms and space for conference centers the city's mayor says this hotel will help the area.
“It helps the city in terms of attracting conferences and attracting meetings and tourists to the community. We are in the Finger Lakes. We are in an area that is really noted for tourists, so it is an important piece for the city,” said Polimeni.
On Thursday Canandaigua got the okay to start demolition of the Steamboat Landing restaurant. That's what is on the Lake Shore Drive property right now.
The mayor says this addition will also help connect the downtown area of Canandaigua, to the Lake Shore neighborhood. She says that has been a longtime goal of hers.
“We are looking for way that we can enhance that connection. It is difficult because we do have a major highway that kind of separates that and we are looking for ways to make that connection better,” said Polimeni.
So what is next for the hotel project? They will begin demolition on the site in April or May, and now they will apply for construction permits, which is a process that could take up to 90 days.
