Schumer warns about generic painkiller abuse

A very powerful pain medication is set to be released in generic form next month and Senator Schumer is worried about an increase in abuse and thefts.

The prescription drug OxyContin will be released into generic form and Schumer is calling for the Food and Drug Administration to enforce the same type of “anti-abuse” protections that the current version of OxyContin has.

Right now the branded version of the pills can't be crushed, making it harder to inject or snort. The FDA does not currently require the generic version to have this feature.

Senator Schumer believes we are in the midst of a prescription drug abuse epidemic and says allowing these pills on the street with no “anti-abuse” mechanisms would open the floodgates even further.
