Two dozen security officers at University of Rochester became part of the school's first group of peace officers Thursday.
News10NBC were there while they took the oath at the university. Legislation signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo in December made the venture possible.
The director of security services says this will allow officers to respond more efficiently and have more legal authority.
Walter Mauldin, Director of Security Services, said, "We have had a long standing desire to achieve peace officer status. not as an outcome of itself, but to provide us with tools that would allow us to respond more quickly, more effectively, and with better training to serve the university."
The officers will begin a five month program for training and certification.
