A new park on Buffalo's Lake Erie waterfront is expected to open just in time for the start of summer.
The Buffalo News reports that the 21-acre park is on Buffalo's outer harbor, near the tip of a peninsula separating the lake from the Buffalo Ship Canal. The park will include a beach, sand volleyball courts, trails, bridges and public art. It's expected to open by the end of May.
The site was used for decades by the New York Power Authority to store the boom used to keep ice from flowing down the Niagara River. Most of the land was transferred to the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. in 2011.
The new park is part of Buffalo's ongoing effort to redevelop its waterfront district by expanding public access.
