If you're the parent of a child in third to eighth grade, you know they have exams ahead next week.
Those students will take math and English language arts exams based on the new common core curriculum. It's a new set of standards meant to make sure students are learning at grade level and will succeed in school.
News10NBC caught up with Rochester City School Superintendent Dr. Bolgen Vargas. He visited small groups of students at School No. 10 as they worked with teachers to prepare for the exams. There are some concerns about these tests, but Dr. Bolgen Vargas says the goal is to make sure students have support.
Dr. Bolgen Vargas, RCSD Superintendent, said, "Everybody's concerned when you have some new tests. That's something that I acknowledge. but we have been working with teachers and families and sending the message that its all about supporting our students."
Student performance on these exams will also be used in state teacher evaluations.
