There have been three break-ins in the last two weeks at the Southeast Y, which is in Pittsford. Police say, in these cases, the thieves are taking keys and wallets out of unlocked lockers and then stealing things from cars.
The Y says while they do have cameras in in the lobby and parking lot, they didn't catch any of the thefts on video. They said it is hard for any health club to prevent this type of thing.
This is what Y officials said when News10NBC first asked about the thefts.
Sue Reschke, Vice President of Finance at Y, said, “I don't think there has been anything unusual in the last few weeks. This past Monday, we did have an unusual event where someone took a rock and smashed through a window of a car and took some personal belongings. But nothing else unusual at the Southeast Y.”
But Thursday afternoon, News10NBC spoke with law enforcement who say twice last week at the Southeast Y, they had someone go into the men's locker room, take keys from an unlocked locker while people were working out. Police say the person then went into the parking lot and took valuables from the car.
So News10NBC went back and asked Reschke if that was something she considered unusual.
Reschke said, “I wouldn't say that would be unusual. Unfortunately, a lot of members when they come here they feel safe and they aren't thinking about taking care of their personal belongings and put their keys in an unlocked locker. So if there is a smart thief watching in the parking lot, they know they have about a half hour to an hour while the person is working out to get into the Y, or get into their locker and get their keys and they have that 30 to 60 minutes to go to the car and get what they want.”
Again, the Y says it is hard for them to prevent this, but there are things you can do to keep your things safe while working out.
-If you leave personal items, or anything of value, in your car keep it out of sight, and always lock your car.
-If you are putting your things in a locker, lock it, if you forget a lock, the Y says you can get one for the day at the front desk.
-Also, if you see anything suspicious, in the parking lot or locker room tell a staff member.
The Y says these break-ins happened while the Y was open to the community, so really anyone could have been in the locker room. But most times, you do have to be a member to get in them.
