Authorities say searchers haven't been able to find a man who is believed to have drowned after jumping into a northern New York river in an unsuccessful attempt to save a young boy.
Police in Watertown say five-year-old Zachary Finley's body was found at a hydroelectric dam Saturday night, several hours after he went into the Black River while fishing with a 47-year-old Edward Whitfield III in their hometown. Officials say Whitfield jumped into the fast-flowing water to save the boy but was swept down river.
Searches that lasted through Sunday failed to find his body. Police say search crews will be checking the shoreline periodically Monday.
Whitfield was described as a friend of the boy's family.
