The Rochester Amerks season is over and for the second straight year it ended with a loss against Toronto.
The Rochester Amerks were swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Toronto Marlies for the second consecutive season. Now with the Sabres organization ready to shake things up, the trickle down effect will be felt in Rochester.
Chadd Cassidy, Amerks Head Coach, said, “I'm going to miss coming to the rink. It stings. I thought this team was good enough to play a lot more hockey.”
But Rochester ran into a buzz saw that is the Toronto Marlies after being swept in three games against Toronto in the first round of the playoffs. The Amerks have now lost 17 of 18 against the Marlies. It could be worse. Notre Dame football had a 43 game win streak over Navy which ended in 2007. Cassidy wants Rochester's issues against Toronto next season.
Cassidy said, “If I am the head coach here next year, I have to figure out how to beat Toronto and how to get deeper than just getting into the playoffs.”
One man that may not be helping the Amerks next season is 19-year-old Zemgus Girgensons. The rookie showed promise, especially in the playoffs scoring three goals. Buffalo Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier said Girgensons has a shot to play with the big club next season..
Cassidy said, “Being as young as he was, it was a challenge the first half and then to be as dominant, he was in the playoffs. It's fun to watch him and Larson. They are in the same boat they are excellent. Sabres fans should be really excited.
Goalie David Leggio was the constant for the Amerks this season and is now a free agent. There are many moving pieces with the goaltending situation in the Sabres organization, starting with whether or not Ryan Miller will be back. So Leggio's future with the Amerks is clouded.
Cassidy said, “He's been our MVP the last two years and there aren't any situations where you don't want your MVP back. In this business, decisions have to be made and going forward we don't know what the Sabres are going to look like next year and that will determine what will happen here in Rochester.”
Reiger will speak with Sabres Head Coach Ron Rolston about his future next week and that will also affect Cassidy's future with the Amerks.
