Fire officials say an abandoned campfire likely started a large brush fire near the Genesee River Monday.

Crews were called to North Burley Road near Turning Point Park around 4:00p.m. When the first crews arrived, the battalion chief says they found about five acres of brush burning between a trail and the river bank.

He says because of the fire's size, additional firefighters were called in to help.

Battalion Chief Mark Strzyzynski, Rochester Fire Dept, said, "We find these very labor intensive. We're a structural fire department. All of our personal protective gear is very heavy, it's made for going into burning buildings. We don't have anything to actually lightweight to fight the brush fires so it's very taxing on our members and we have to bring in a lot of extra resources."

Officials say the fire was in a rural area. There were no reports of injuries or structures affected.
