Authorities say a father and son have been accused of mistreating 44 dogs found in crates in a Wyoming County town.
Sheriff's deputies say 77-year-old Joseph Wenzel Sr. faces 44 counts of animal abandonment and 54-year-old Joseph Wenzel Jr. is charged with 44 counts of animal abuse and one of false reporting.
The dogs were found last month in the Town of Middlebury. They were mostly pure and mixed-breed Jack Russell terriers and Chihuahuas in poor health, with problems including heart murmurs, matted fur and bad teeth. They were cared for at the Wyoming County animal shelter, which says all but eight had been adopted by Thursday.
It wasn't initially known if the Wenzel's have lawyers.
