Day three of the Lilac Festival proved to be cold and wet, but it didn't stop local vendors from at least trying to cash in, and it certainly didn't stop people from braving the weather and checking out one of Rochester's most popular events.
The Lilac Festival is the unofficial kick off to a busy season for many vendors. But with the recent weather patterns, some were left wondering if the festival would be a wash.
It was rainy, then it was windy and then it was chilly. It was not exactly the way anyone wanted to kick off the Lilac Festival. But from what vendors say, they expect to be just fine.
It was as if mother nature couldn't make up her mind. A bummer for some vendors who rely on the weather.
“It's usually one of the busiest days here for Mother's Day and it's definitely a lot slower due to the weather,” said food vendor Anders DiPinto.
If you walked around the Lilac Festival Sunday afternoon you would have probably thought all of the vendors were sure to take a financial hit.
But surprisingly, that wasn't the case.
“It's been pretty successful so far,” said food vendor Mark Abrams.
Abrams says his food stand has been steady throughout the weekend and he's ready for even more action.
“My expectation is probably a little low for Monday and Tuesday, but Wednesday through the weekend it looks beautiful, so I hope to do extremely well,” he said.
Vendors selling unique items also got an unexpected flow of customers.
“I mean, we really were surprised to see the amount of people that came out to support everybody. We had really good feedback from all of our customers and about other vendors. They weren't just saying what we had, they liked what they saw,” said vendor Alexis Jones.
These vendors have high hopes for the rest of the week. They say they'll be out there, rain or shine.
“We're still ordering like we're going to sell out of a lot of product. We're hoping people come down and do that for us,” said DiPinto.
“Dry, warm, blue skies, sunny and lots of customers,” said Jones.
