A young woman shot and killed just weeks before her high school graduation. Now neighbors are wondering what police are doing to keep their neighborhood safe.
Twenty-year-old Keirra Jones was killed in a drive-by shooting on York Street Tuesday night. Also hurt were, 21-year-old Vernell Rose and 23-year-old Prescilla Pollock. Those two are still in Strong Hospital, but police say they do expect them to survive.
Last night's shooting happened just north of the 19th Ward, an area of the city where police have been beefing up patrols because of violence. But now, many people are asking if those patrols are really making a difference.
Neighbors say it is not unusual to hear shots in their neighborhood, but Tuesday night was different.
They said there were several rounds fired and they say the victims are people that don't bother anyone.
A memorial lays in front of 90 York Street where the shooting happened Tuesday night. Friends and family of Keirra Jones say she was supposed to graduate high school next month. Police say she was friends with the other two people shot and that they live at the home. All three had just come from a graduation party.
Police say it is too soon to tell exactly why this shooting happened, but they do believe it was a targeted attack because of the way the shooting took place. Again, neighbors say this area is no stranger to violence. News10NBC asked Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard about that.
News10NBC's Amanda Ciavarri said, “This is an area that about a month ago there was a number of shootings and you said you would increase patrols there until there was some normalcy. Did that happen and are there increase patrols in that area still?
Chief James Sheppard, Rochester Police Department, said, “Yes, we are in the middle of our impact detail which includes the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and the New York State Police are working together with the Rochester Police Department. Obviously, we have been very active in our proactive efforts, over a period of time, as you know, there have been several weeks were we haven't had an incidence like this flare up. I believe as a result of our investigations, we will will be able to close this one out.”
The chief also said Tuesday night's events will mean even more officers will be patrolling that area. He says, right now, they are looking for anyone with information on, not only, who may have wanted to target the victims, but also anything that could help the investigation, like make and model of the car involved. They say anyone with information is urged to call 911.
The shooting happened on York Street just before 10:00 p.m.
When police arrived on scene, they found two victims, 20-year-old Kierra Jones and 21-year-old Vernell Rose. Both Jones and Rose were rushed to Strong Hospital Memorial. Jones was pronounced dead at the hospital.
A third victim, 24-year-old Prescilla Pollock left the scene prior police arrived. She was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital in a private vehicle.
Both Pollock and Rose are in stable condition at Strong Memorial Hospital.
Police say the three victims were standing with a group in front of a house on York Street when a vehicle drove by and began shooting.
Police do not have a suspect in custody at this time and they say this is still an active investigation and anyone with information is asked to call 911.
