Dog bites account for one-third of homeowner liability claims

They may be man's best friend but their costing insurance companies a lot of money.
According to the insurance information institute, dog bites account for more than a third of all homeowner liability claims, with pay-outs totaling more than $489-million last year alone.  
While the number of claims has gone down, the cost has climbed due to rising medical costs, higher settlements and court awards.  
Last year the average cost paid out for dog bite claims was $29,752.
