People with sleep apnea are more likely to die from sudden cardiac death than the general population.

Sleep apnea occurs when a person stops breathing for 10 seconds or more at least five times an hour.

A new Mayo Clinic study of 10,000 people with the condition finds they are more likely to have a sudden heart attack -- especially those over age 60 with a severe case of sleep apnea.

Doctors say treating it may not only improve quality of life for patients and their spouses, but could be a life-saver.
