David Leggio has been the Amerks MVP the past two seasons and now the goaltender will no longer wear the red, white and blue.
Leggio has signed with the Washington Capitals.
With a slew of young goalies in the Buffalo Sabres organization it was no surprise when general manager Darcy Reiger informed David Leggio that the team would not resign the restricted free agent. The soon to be 29-year-old Leggio has been the face of the Amerks, but never got a chance with the Sabres.
Now the Buffalo native will have a better chance to make his NHL debut with the Capitals. Leggio signed a one-year, two way contract with Washington and is expected to begin the season with the Hershey Bears. Two goaltenders are ahead of him on the Washington depth chart.
Leggio has been a rock for Rochester. This past season, he led the AHL in wins with 38 minutes played. The two-time team MVP helped the Amerks to the playoffs the past two seasons.
A former Amerk teammate will join Leggio in Hershey. Greece native Derek Whitmore has signed an AHL contract with the Bears. After playing two games with the Sabres in 2011, Whitmore played in Germany last season where he scored nine goals and tallied 14 assists in 23 games.
