Churchville native and four-time Grammy award winner Renee Fleming received the 2012 National Medal of Arts Wednesday afternoon. President Obama presented the award at The White House in Washington, DC. First Lady Michelle Obama will also attend.
Renée Fleming, an almuna of the Eastman School of music, is receiving the award because of her contributions to American music. Known to many as "the people's diva," The White House says that Fleming has captivated audiences around the world with an adventurous repertoire spanning opera and the classical tradition to jazz and contemporary pop.
The National Medal of Arts is the highest honor given for achievement in the arts.
