It has become a hot political issue at the state level, but professional mixed martial arts fighting remains illegal in New York State. But despite the ban, local fighting fans will get a chance to see the sports live Saturday at Frontier Field.
Even though New York is home to some of the top fighters in the world including UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, who was born in Rochester, New York is the only state in the country that still has a ban on the sport.
But that's not stopping the show from going on at Frontier Field. The weight-ins were Friday afternoon for Saturday's "Battle of the Titans" MMA event. Now because Saturday's event is only an amateur event and none of the fights will be collecting any money, the event is perfectly legal and is being dubbed the first outdoor MMA event in the state's history.
Gates open at 6:00p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 7:00p.m. There will be a total of ten fights with a main event between Rochester's own Madgeil Matias and Ithaca's Paul Karabon.
Tickets for the fights are still available at the Frontier Field Box Office. Tickets range in price from $25 to $100.
