There is a brand new queen and princess "Miss Puerto Rico of Rochester."
They were crowned Saturday night at the Rochester Museum and Science Center at the "Miss Puerto Rico of Rochester Pageant."
Crystal Colon was crowned queen. She just graduated from East High School.
Celisse Rivera was crowned princess.
Organizers say the pageant is an opportunity for the young women to enhance their skills in public speaking, dancing, prepare them for college and remind them of their cultural heritage. They also say it allows them to serve as role models for younger generations.
"We have a lot of the young females, that not only look forward to learning about their culture, but representing it throughout the year as queen or princess,” said Orlando Ortiz, Puerto Rican Festival President.
This is one of several events sponsored by the annual Puerto Rican Festival. This year marks its 44th anniversary. It is Monroe County's longest running cultural festival. This year's festival kicks off August 9.
