The Sabres ended last season with a win over Islanders in a shootout. Thomas Vanek scored the lone goal in that shootout and Ryan Miller stopped the three shots he faced. Afterwards, Miller waved to the Buffalo crowd, understanding he and Vanek could be traded in the off-season. Neither were. Both were back at the First Niagara Center Wednesday for the start of training camp.
Miller and Vanek are two of the few veterans on what will be one of the NHL's youngest teams. Vanek has even acknowledged this is a rebuilding year.
General Manager Darcy Regier is a man of his word. Hours after saying he will make every attempt to sign unrestricted free agent Cody Hodgson, he did just that. The 23-year-old Hodgson and the Sabres have agreed to a 6-year contract. Hodgson, the team's number one center, was second on the team with 34 points last season.
The players reported to camp Wednesday morning to take their physicals before the scrimmages begin Thursday.
Ron Rolston is the first head coach to open camp other than Lindy Ruff since 1996. Rolston took over after Ruff was fired in February.
