If you want to get an upgrade to your recent vintage Apple phone but don't want to shell out money for the new iPhone 5S or 5C, there's another way to go starting today.
You can begin downloading the new Apple iOS software to upgrade current phones. The new software download is free - and among the main features is that you can use a series of swipes instead of taps to get to key functions. For example, you can currently swipe to get to the camera while your phone is in lock-screen mode. But with iOS 7, you can use the same swipe function to get hold of the settings app, which controls many of the phone's main features. The swiping also lets you go backward and forward within the Safari browser. There are also improvements with the built-in camera, the app store as well as the addition of the new iTunes Radio service.
The new software is available for the iPhone 4, 4S and 5 models, the iPad 2 and later models, as well as the iPad Mini and last year's edition of the iPod Touch.
