Advocacy groups are pushing for changes in New York policy to reverse what they say is a rising tide of hunger among the working poor, children and the elderly while combating obesity and boosting farming.

The Hunger Action Network is pushing for expansion of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

And the AARP says as many as 500,000 more older New Yorkers could qualify for the monthly SNAP cash, but aren't applying for it.

The AARP is asking the state to streamline its procedures to make it easier for New Yorkers 60 years old and older to get the benefit. It averages $170 a month.

The Hunger Action Network wants the state to act on plans to send more fresh food to schools from New York farmers.
