A University of Rochester student was robbed and stabbed. Now police are increasing patrols in an area that's getting new shops, stores and student housing. The attack happened in an area known as CollegeTown on Mount Hope Avenue.
The victim is Atik Ahmed. He is 18-years-old and a student at the University of Rochester. Police say he was walking in the area of Elmwood Avenue on his way to Wendy's restaurant around 9:00 p.m. Tuesday. Police say Ahmed was alone when police say a man came up behind him and demanded money. The student did hand over the money, but police say but the person pulled out a knife and swung at Ahmed, slashing him in his upper body. He was treated at Strong Memorial Hospital. Police say his injuries did not appear to be serious.
Mark Fischer, UR Department Chief for Public Safety, said, “These types of things can happen anywhere, in any neighborhood. We just tell our students no matter where you are just be alert to your surroundings, put the cell phone in your pocket, that's a huge issue right now, nationwide issue with thefts of cell phones, and to try to travel in groups. Be alert.”
News10NBC is told both the Rochester Police Department and campus safety officers will have extra patrols in that area Wednesday night.
