Researchers: 1 dose of HPV vaccine may be as effective as 3

New research suggests one dose of an HPV vaccine may be enough to protect against cervical cancer.
The current recommendations call for three doses of the vaccine, but only a small percentage of girls actually complete the treatment.
A study of women in Costa Rica found those who got just one dose of the "Cervarix" vaccine had stable antibodies against the virus for four years, suggesting it had a lasting effect.
Researchers say it's too soon to change policy guidelines, because they haven't studied the effects of a single dose of the "Gardasil" vaccine, which is more commonly used in the US and other countries. The University of Rochester Medical Center played an important  role in the development of that vaccine.
