What if you could know before you went to a restaurant if it had violations there? Would it change your mind about going?
Well next time before you head to your favorite restaurant, or meet your friends for dinner, there is a list you might want to check.
It's a new state-run database of the latest inspections on local restaurants.
The site lists all kinds of violations, everything from food not being protected to improper storage of cleaning supplies. It's all in an effort to help you know exactly what is going on.
Look, we get it. Sometimes what you don't know can't hurt you. But this database is designed to help you keep you and your family safe and healthy.
Here's how it works.
It's called Health Data NY. You click on the icon "like to dine out," and it takes you to the list of inspections and violations. You can search by county, zip code, address or city.
News10NBC searched Webster. That's where we also found Billy's Homestead Restaurant. It has zero violations on its latest inspection in November.
Billy let us come into his restaurant. He says now these kinds of websites are necessary.
"All the new generation now, you know, they're looking at the computers and look at the websites before they go any place," said Bill Petrou, owner of Billy's Homestead Restaurant.
Bill and Susan Fay may not be considered new generation, but they say they would use the information.
"If we saw a restaurant that had problems, it would definitely deter us from going there," said Bill Fay.
"It would mean a lot to me. It would make a difference to me," said Susan Fay.
It's not just restaurants. Your child’s school cafeteria inspections are on the website as well and it works the same. Search for your school and find the results.
