New research reveals mental disorder rates among American adults are severely underestimated.
Officials say it's because people tend to under-report treatment for mental illness over their lifetime, especially when compared to physical ailments.
Researchers compared patients' own memory of their mental and physical health histories to their actual medical records.
While their recall of diseases like diabetes, stroke and cancer were mostly accurate, they had large discrepancies in recalling depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, social phobias and substance abuse.
The fluctuating symptoms and stigma of mental illness could be the reason for this gap.
