Congressional investigators say federal agencies aren't doing enough to track incidents of sexual abuse committed by school personnel and should better educate districts and states about the issue.
The Government Accountability Office says in a report that the breadth of the problem is unclear. But it noted there are numerous media reports of cases and referenced a 2004 report by the Education Department that estimated that nearly 10 percent of students are victims of sexual abuse by school personnel during their school career.
An Education Department official told the GAO the department will explore ways to better track the problem. She says the agency is updating its sexual misconduct training and will look for ways to work with the other agencies.
