It was an emotional moment Saturday for a Geneseo mother and daughter at Wilmot Cancer Center.
After receiving a discouraging cancer diagnosis, Denise Szafran was treated to a special last wish ceremony Saturday afternoon.
Denise’s daughter Christine is close to graduating with her master’s degree in education from Buffalo State College. But both mom and daughter realized Denise would likely not live to see her graduate.
But that changed Saturday as the college and hospital joined together to let Christine to hold an early graduation ceremony.
This is wonderful. It's a real gift for me and I appreciate it. Not everyone gets this chance, so I got the chance to see them do this,” said Denise Szafran.
“I've been wanting to do this for my mom. Again, she said this was her one wish. So to be able to do this for her, 800 things went through my head all at the same when I found out we could do this,” said Christine Szafran.
Once Christine officially graduates in May, she says she hopes to be a high school math teacher and would like to be back in the classroom and teaching in the fall.
