Rochester Police say an off-duty police sergeant shot his friend when he thought he was breaking into his apartment.

Police responded to a home on South Avenue near Comfort Street around 5:25 a.m. Monday, for reports of a burglary in progress.

Police say that 51-year-old Chuck Andrews, of South Carolina, entered Sergeant Anthony Bongiovanni's apartment, trying to visit his friend. This all startled the off-duty sergeant and he shot Andrews in the torso. After that, Bongiovanni realized it was his friend and immediately called 911.

News10NBC spoke to a business owner who says Bongiovanni is the type of person who is always protecting everyone in the neighborhood.

Police say Andrews is currently in guarded, but stable condition. Sergeant Bongiovanni is on paid suspension until the investigation is over.
