A memorial in honor of a volunteer firefighter and town supervisor was stolen. Investigators say it vanished just a day after it was put up. Officials say the memorial was taken from the fire station in Bethany, which is near Batavia.

Investigators say 75-year-old Louis Gayton died unexpectedly earlier this month and the memorial was their way to remember his service.

The investigator working on this case says he hasn't seen anything like this in a long time. A memorial for a fallen firefighter vanished into thin air, but what was taken is maybe the most interesting part of this story.

A firemen's jacket, hat, and boots placed right outside the volunteer fire department in Bethany is now gone. They were stolen the day after they were placed at the memorial to remember fallen firefighter and town supervisor, Louis Gayton. Investigators say Gayton died earlier this month after 50 years of service. The memorial was set up last week.

Chief Deputy Gordon Dibble, Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, said, “It's unusual, and it certainly is disrespectful. No doubt about it. I kind of liken it to going in a graveyard and tipping over gravestones in a graveyard.”

Investigators don't have any leads at this time. Anyone with information is asked to call the Genesee County Sheriff's Office at 345-3000.
