SCHOHARIE COUNTY - People in Schoharie County are watching hurricane sandy closely especially since the Gilboa Dam is currently full.
Work to rebuild the dam was called off last week because water levels were rising.
New York City DEP which oversees the dam assures NewsChannel 13 the dam is safe and strong.
We asked if they are going to lower water levels as the storm approaches.
At this point they are exploring all options, including the possibility of lowering the levels.
State Assemblyman Pete Lopez is pushing for that to happen, in fact just a few hours ago, he sent letters to Governor Cuomo, New York City DEP and Encon, urging them to make that
“We want to find a way to create a void to lower the dam level in advance of any storm that will come and the whole premise is just to blunt the impact,” said Lopez
NewsChannel13 plans to stay in touch with all of the agencies involved and will keep you updated on developments.
