EDINBURG, N.Y. (AP) - The new Batchellerville Bridge over the Great Sacandaga Lake is expected to open later this month after two years of construction.
The Leader-Herald of Gloversville reports that the $56 million project was slowed by rainy weather in 2011, but now it's back on schedule.
The 3,000-foot bridge carries Saratoga County Route 98 over the 26-mile-long lake in Edinburg. Many truckers have had to drive 35 miles out of the way because of a 15-ton weight limit on the old bridge.
The new bridge will be wider and will have a wide bike lane.
The state Department of Transportation says concrete piers from the old bridge will be used to create fish habitat on the sandy bed of the lake.
