CLAVERACK, N.Y. (AP) - The Preservation League of New York state is presenting a grant to support restoration of a historic bridge in Claverack.
The league is presenting $8,400 this morning to support the cost of a historic structure report for the Shaw Bridge in Claverac. The bridge, built in 1870, is a double-span Whipple patent bowstring bridge, the only known bridge of its type in New York and perhaps the United States.
The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Its wooden deck has deteriorated to the point where it's not safe even for pedestrians.
The town has been seeking funding to allow the bridge to be restored and reopened to foot traffic.
