LATHAM - A local landmark, the Starlite Theater is coming down.

Demolition began in Latham today.

Long before the Times Union Center, or the refurbished Proctors theatre in Schenectady, there was the "Colonie Summer Theater," or the "Tent" as most of locals knew it.

Thursday afternoon, the wrecking crew moved in to level the place, and make way for a new, commercial development

Colonie supervisor Paula Mahan says "We do not like to see it sit vacant”

Mahan says the Galesi Group will create a commercial office and residential complex on the 57 acre site, six structures in all.

It hosted everything from Mike Tyson's early fights to high school graduations, but primarily, the place was where all the biggest show biz stars performed.

Local radio and TV personality David Allan covered the entertainment at the "Tent" for several decades, and can recite all the big name stars.

As the name changed from the Coliseum, then the Starlite Theater until it all shut down in 1998.

Concerns about traffic torpedoed a Wal-Mart Supercenter for that same area., but John Lacivitas, says this would be different because the traffic would not be constant, seven days a week.
