"It's fitness in disguise" says co-owner and instructor Miranda Weese. "It's fun fitness. That's our whole goal here, making a workout fun, you don't want to know you're working out."
Welcome to Zume Fitness in Saratoga - taught by professional dancers and a yoga teacher certified in aerial yoga the workout gets the weight off your lower body - the hammock 'freeing' you to better stretch, not only your lower body but your shoulders and neck as no earthbound exercise can.
"Yoga people always talk about too much compression when they go upside down, shoulder stand, head stands, this take away everything"explains yoga instructor Susan Paschal.
As far as I'm concerned, "It feels like the most wonderful stretch and like you're a little kid, you know how little kids make cocoons for themselves. I want one at the station."
But that would be tough as it takes special rigging to support these washable hammocks - which can hold up to 1-thousand pounds.
You do have to get over a fear of falling, which I'm promised won't happen because of the way you're supported in the hammock - and then the sky - or the ceiling - is the limit. That said, it's not all back flips and swinging through the air . The supportive hammock facilitates your range of motion.
"It's a moving apparatus so your core is working the entire time even if you don't think so. Your arms, your back strength, is really it's just a full body experience" says Miranda.
Classes run an hour - Zume fitness also offers more pedestrian exercise opportunities - like spin bikes and Zumba - and this merry band of exercise entrepreneurs is working on opening a juice and oxygen bar in a space near the aerial studio - the finishing touches on exercise with a flourish.
Classes cost $15 each. A frequent flyer pass is available. For more info check out their website, http://www.zumefitstudio.com/ttp://www.zumefitstudio.com/
