Pop star Justin Bieber is now connected to a murder-for-hire case with ties to the Capital Region.

The complicated case NewsChannel 13 first told you about last month is now more bizarre than ever.

Investigators in New Mexico say they believe two hit men had their sights set on the teen pop supersta

Police say 41-year-old Mark Staake and his 23-year-old nephew Tanner Ruane traveled to Vermont from New Mexico to kill two people.

Ruane was arrested at a gas station in Rotterdam last month. Staake was arrested in St. Albans, Vermont on outstanding warrants near the Canadian border.

They were allegedly hired by convicted rapist and murderer Dana Martin who is serving two life sentences. The three had met in prison.

Investigators say Martin is obsessed with Bieber.

After the two had finished their job in Vermont, Martin had wanted them to go to Madison Square Garden in New York City to strangle Bieber and his bodyguard with a paisley pattern neck tie and then castrate them.

After Ruane’s arrest in Rotterdam, detectives found weapons and tools in his 1983 BMW, including a pair of pruning shears and documents detailing the identities of the victims, and their families.

Police in New Mexico say it was the man who hired the would-be assassins who turned them in. Investigators say they don't know why Martin foiled his own elaborate plot.
