SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - Fireworks are back on the schedule for an upstate New York city's popular First Night celebration after the pyrotechnics had been scrapped because of security issues.
Officials in Saratoga Springs say donations by local business owners will allow for the staging of the traditional fireworks display that caps the city's New Year's Eve celebration at midnight. Saratoga's First Night, now in its 15th year, typically attracts more than 10,000 people to the city downtown entertainment district.
Police officials said this week that the fireworks were being eliminated from the festivities because the department didn't have the staffing to adequately patrol the downtown park where the pyrotechnics are launched.
Officials say a construction company owner has agreed to provide equipment, materials and security personnel to properly close the park to the public.
