TROY, N.Y. (AP) - A World War II veteran who was among the sailors belatedly honored for their heroics on D-Day in France is getting special recognition at a school near his hometown.
David Catallo of Waterford will officially receive the Army's Bronze Medal and Combat Medical Badge during a ceremony being held Wednesday afternoon at La Salle Institute in Troy.
Catallo was a corpsman in the 6th Naval Beach Battalion when it landed an hour after the first wave hit the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. The unit's doctors and other medical personnel suffered heavy casualties. Catallo was wounded.
Last year, surviving members of the unit and the relatives of deceased sailors from the battalion were told by the Army that they would be receiving the medals.
