BALLSTON SPA - Joey Paul, 29, of Schuylerville was escorted by police into the Saratoga County Courthouse Monday. She said a few words in her defense about charges accusing her of killing her boyfriend.
"I'm innocent. It was an accident," Paul said.
But police said it was no accident back in July 2011 when Paul took the life of Matthew Furlani, 28. The pair had an ongoing relationship. Friends and neighbors who didn't want to be identified said there was an argument before they heard the gun go off inside the couple's apartment on Church Street in Schuylerville. Paul's sister Catina Archambeault Stewart said Furlani and her sister had a violent relationship. She said they were both drug addicts. She says she was afraid for her sister and always knew the relationship would end in tragedy.
Paul was indicted on charges of murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon. She pleaded not guilty on all counts. Her attorney Frederick Rench said he can't discuss the details of the case but said his client will be vindicated.
"An incident took place. She was part of the incident. Speaking beyond that would be inappropriate," Rench told Newschannel 13. "The truth is going to come out at trial. She's not guilty of the charges she now faces."
Meanwhile, the couple's neighbors said this was a senseless crime. Many of them were in tears Monday saying Furlani didn't deserve what happened to him and they hope justice will prevail.
