BALTIMORE, Md. – The second consecutive game UAlbany used a full-team effort to defeat UMBC, 79-56, on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at the RAC Arena. All 11 Great Danes, who suited for the game, recorded at least one basket.
The Great Danes had three players in double-figures, as Jacob Iati paced the squad with 14 points on 4-of-11 shooting from behind the arc. Peter Hooley and DJ Evans each recorded double-figures with 10 points, respectively. Hooley filled the stat sheet along with his 10 points with eight rebounds and six assists.
A stellar first half for the Great Danes, as they jumped out to a 17-3 lead with 13:04 left in the first. Black sparked the early run with six fastbreak points off of two turnovers and one long rebound.
UAlbany held UMBC to one made basket through the first 11 minutes of the contest.
Following two made buckets by UAlbany’s John Puk, UMBC (6-17, 4-6 America East) gained some momentum by going on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 14, 33-19, with 1:06 remaining. Neller nailed two consecutive three-pointers during the run.
The Great Danes finished the half with a Blake Metcalf layup and a Rowley made free throw to put the lead at 17, 36-19. Black led all scorers at the half with nine points.
UAlbany (18-7, 7-4 America East) came out in the second half the same way as the first half, with a 25-10 run to extend the lead to 32, 61-29, with 10:01 left. Iati, who did not hit a three in the first half, drained four three-pointers during the stretch.
The Great Danes did not relinquish the lead for the final 10 minutes of the game and improved to 7-4 in league play.
UAlbany continues its two-game roadtrip, heading in the opposite directon, to Orono, ME to face Maine on Saturday, Feb. 9. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
