UAlbany Takes Sole Possession of Third Place in America East

ALBANY, N.Y. –The senior guard tandem of Mike Black and Jacob Iati combined for 32 points to pace the University at Albany past the University of Hartford, 75-49, on Saturday, Feb. 16 at SEFCU Arena. The Great Danes win sweeps the home-and-home series over the Hawks and move into sole possession of the number three seed for the America East Conference Tournament with three conference games left.

Iati led all scorers in the game with 18 points, shooting 4-of-5 from behind the arc. The York, Pa. native’s four three-pointers have now given him 77 on the season, which ties him with Todd Centar for third all-time in Division I school history for made three-pointers in a season.

Black shook off his previous shooting woes with his second double-figure scoring performance of 14 points, shooting 3-of-6 from behind the arc and tallied three assists and three rebounds as well. Four other players, Sam Rowley, John Puk, DJ Evans, and Jayson Guerrier, complimented the senior guard tandem all having scored eight points apiece and combined for 17 of the teams 34 total rebounds.

UAlbany (19-8, 8-5 America East) jumped out to an early double-digit lead of 11, 16-5, with 14:58 left in the first half. Redshirt-freshman guard Peter Hooley led the team during the stretch with his four points of the contest.

Hartford (14-12, 7-6 America East) responded with a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to three, 18-15, with 12:16 remaining in the half. The Hawks Corban Wroe recorded four of his game total eight points during the stretch.

The Great Danes did not look back, finishing the final 12 minutes on a 22-5 run to extend their lead to 20, 40-20. As a team, UAlbany was shooting 70 percent or better from all aspects of the offensive end and holding Hartford to 26.1 percent from the floor (6-23) and 20 percent from behind the arc (3-15).

UAlbany hit cruise control in the second half and not allow Hartford to come within 10 points or less. The Great Danes lead tallied, as high as, 29 points twice and finished the contest with a 26-point victory, 75-49.

The Great Danes look to carry their success to their matchup against Boston University on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at Case Gym. Tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
