WORCESTER, MA – The College of Saint Rose continued its post-season run with a 67-64 win at Assumption in a quarterfinal game in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship earlier this evening.
The Golden Knights (15-13) now advance to the semifinals of the NE-10 Championship to face Southern New Hampshire this Wednesday, March 6 at 7:00 pm in Manchester, NH. The Penmen advanced to the next round with a 79-75 overtime victory at New Haven tonight.
Junior center Dominykas Milka (Queens, NY/Christ The King) recorded his 18th “double-double” of the year with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Andre Pope (White Plains, NY/Iona Prep) and freshman forward Tyler Sayre (Garnerville, NY/Albertus Magnus) each contributed 14 points in the effort. Saint Rose shot 48.9 (23-for-47) percent from the floor.
For Assumption (20-7), sophomore guard Terrance Bobb-Jones (Wilmington, DE/Delcastle Voc-Tech) scored a game-high 16 points to go along with seven rebounds and six assists. Graduate student Kevin Donahue (Pawcatuck, CT/Stonington) shot 3-of-4 from 3-point range to help account for 15 points.
After the Golden Knights held the lead for the majority of the first half, Assumption took a 24-22 lead with just five minutes left in the first half to control the advantage for the first time since 2-0 in the opening minutes. Saint Rose answered the call with a run in the final minutes that was capped off by a pair of free throws by Pope with one second remaining to give the Golden Knights a 34-33 halftime lead.
Pope and Sayre each scored eight points for Saint Rose while Donahue led all scorers in the first half behind 10 points. Each team scored nine points off turnovers in the half while the Golden Knights held a slight 15-14 advantage on the glass.
The competitive nature of the contest continued into the second half as the largest lead the Golden Knights were able to achieve was five points on two occasions, both in the last 1:34 of the game. Milka helped create both of those margins with two jumpers that were interrupted by sophomore forward Jimmy Zenevitch (Metheun, MA/Central Catholic) for the Greyhounds.
Assumption cut the Saint Rose lead to one point with a mere three seconds remaining on two free throws. However, Sayre converted on both of his free throws after being fouled to seal the final of 67-64 in favor of the Golden Knights.
The winner of Wednesday’s matchup between the Golden Knights and Southern New Hampshire will travel to face the winner of the Franklin Pierce at Saint Anselm on Saturday, March 9 at 1:00 pm.
