ALBANY -- Undeterred by the brightly-lit front porch, the four surveillance cameras, and the 33 ADT signs and stickers visible from the sidewalk, two people strode up to a Yates St. couple's front porch and attempted to steal a decorative lion statute early Saturday morning.

When the homeowner spotted the thieves in action, she opened a window to trigger the house alarm. The blaring siren and flashing red strobe light startled the thieves, causing them to set down the $400 statue and flee into the darkness.

"It's the principle behind the matter: that it's my property," homeowner Anthony Alfonso told NewsChannel 13. "I worked hard to buy this, and now some kid or group of kids -- whether they do it for kicks or not, I don't know -- but they decided to take advantage."

Alfonso and his wife filed a police report. They were planning to share the video with an investigator, in the hope of finding the thieves and pressing charges against them.

"I hope the two get identified and hopefully it acts as a deterrent for future attacks against my property," Alfonso said.

The Alfonsos live in a neighborhood comprised mostly of student rental properties. Despite the many drinking parties that routinely take place on their block, they said Saturday's incident was the first attempted robbery they have experienced.
