WATERVLIET -- Demolition of Saint Patrick's Church in Watervliet could resume at any point after a temporary order to stop it was lifted on Thursday. A group of residents called Citizens For Saint Patrick's who want to preserve the landmark are making a new argument. They discovered an old picture and other evidence they said prove the century old church has a steel frame and doesn't need millions of dollars in structural repairs as previously thought.
"It's been said that it's a brick masonry bearing wall building and the deterioration that you see in the peers compromises the structural integrity of the building," said John Waite, an architect working with Citizens For Saint Patricks. "And it's the reason why the building has to come down."
John Nigro from Nigro Companies is redeveloping the site into a shopping center. He said three companies studied the building and confirmed there's some steel in the flooring but not the frame. He said the project will continue as planned.
