BALLSTON SPA - A woman from Charlton will spend the next three to nine years behind bars.
Virginia "Ginny" DeCapria pleaded guilty in March to stealing money from the fire department she worked for. She was sentenced Monday afternoon.
DeCapria stole $500,000 while serving as secretary treasurer of Charlton Fire District No. 1. She also pleaded guilty to failing to pay taxes on the stolen money.
As DeCapria was led from court in handcuffs, NewsChannel 13 asked her if she was remorseful. "Very sorry," she said.
She learned Monday afternoon that she'll spend at least three years, and a maximum of nine years in prison for stealing from fire district.
She wrote hundreds of checks to herself and used district accounts like they were her own.
"She used it to purchase personal items, plastic surgery, dinners, all kinds of things. No one else made those purchases," said Saratoga County District Attorney Jim Murphy.
Attorney Terry Hannigan gave a victim impact statement on behalf of the fire department and the community DeCapria ripped off.
"It's embarrassing. It's antithetical to what we do in the fire service. We're there to help people,"said Hannigan, who is also a volunteer firefighter.
He says she's given all of volunteer fire service a black eye.
The sentence was part of a plea agreement that will have DeCapria spend as few as three to a maximum of nine years behind bars. She was also ordered to pay back $180,000. The other $320,000 was covered by insurance.
"She is solely responsible for the money that was taken. It was her conduct that caused the $500,000 to be taken," said Murphy.
Prosecutors contend that even after DeCapria admitted her guilt, she was blaming others.
