BERKSHIRE COUNTY - If you think the mosquitoes are bad this year, you're not alone. Berkshire County is declaring war on the pesky bugs.

Mosquito spraying started Wednesday night in parts of the county and it will continue every night, weather permitting.

Berkshire County officials say all the wet weather and flooding we've seen have lead to a large mosquito population this year.

There was a human case of the West Nile virus in Pittsfield last year -- and the virus also showed up in dozens of mosquitoes.

The county is spraying in hopes of reducing the risk. They say people at home can also help.

“If you have bird baths, kiddie pools, unattended tires, even depressions in your yard, those things can all breed mosquitoes and in the warm weather it happens very fast,” said Chris Horton of Berkshire County Mosquito Control.

County officials say the spray is very safe. It's designed for residential areas and dissipates  quickly.
