Called the western blot, the test to determine HIV infection hasn't been updated since 1985.

Now it's been enhanced and that means faster determination of HIV status.

The improved test can also discriminate between the common HIV 1 virus and the less common HIV 2.

Bottom line, this means earlier diagnosis, earlier treatment and better outcomes.

The CDC has approved this enhanced test.

New York is poised to become one of the first states to use it.

This test compliments the rapid testing done at many walk -in sites.

1,737 people are living with HIV/AIDS in Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer and Saratoga Counties.
