Man wanted for forgery caught while applying for benefits

FORT EDWARD - Authorities in Washington County say a man applying for benefits turned out to be a fugitive wanted in Vermont.

Under arrest is 43-year-old Edward Johnson of Clemons. He was taken into custody at the Washington County Department of Social Services on Friday.

Investigators say he was wanted on charges of passing forged checks.

Johnson is in custody pending an extradition hearing.
