Kathy Sheehan is at her headquarters Sunday morning getting ready to knock on more doors just two days before the primary. A new YNN/Siena Poll giving her a significant lead in the race seemingly had not effected the campaign.

“I knocked on doors all day yesterday. I'm going to knock on doors today. Tomorrow, I'm going to work like I always do. After work, I'm going to knock on doors again,” said the Democratic Mayoral hopeful.

Sheehan, the City Treasurer, is facing former City Councilman Corey Ellis in the democratic primary. The new poll released Sunday morning shows Sheehan as the clear front runner with the support of 68 percent of likely voters compared to 20 percent for Ellis.

Siena College pollster Steve Greenberg says when you peel back the layers, Ellis is well liked by Albany voters, "but Sheehan is more well like and she has run up a huge lead heading into these closing days before the primary."

Greenberg says Ellis has strong support among African Americans but it wasn't enough to offset Sheehan's lead among whites.

The two candidates are running to replace Jerry Jennings, who's retiring after two decades in office. Greenberg says the majority of residents feel the city is headed in the right direction. But many of them are concerned with economic issues. Those all maybe reasons why he says Sheehan is in the lead.

“I believe they look at my background and experience and they look at the fact that I've been a City Treasurer. I understand the finances. I understand the operations. I'm going to be able to walk in on day one and really start to move the city forward,” says Sheehan.

Ellis did not return our phone calls for comment on the poll result. The winning democrat will face candidates from the Republican, Conservative and Green parties in November.

There is also a Democratic Primary to replace Kathy Sheehan as city treasurer.

Darius Shahinfar will face off against Gary Domalewicz.
